I decided pretty young that I was ‘bad’ at science. So, I did what I usually did as a kid with things that I was ‘bad’ at – I stopped trying. Leave it to me to end up with a biology teacher-turned-principal for a girlfriend. Lucky for me, she is a patient soul.
Many a time she will listen to me spew a gazillion words at her about the world I envision: one that is interdependent and where everyone that taps in is the better for it. “It sounds to me like mutualism within a generative ecosystem,” she’ll reply coolly.
“Break that down for me, will ya?” I’ll ask. And just like that, science is fascinating.
Okay, stick with me here.
In biology, mutualism is defined as a relationship that benefits two organisms. Let’s take your bees and your flowers. Flowers provide bees with nectar, which bees collect to feed their colonies. Bees provide flowers with pollen allowing them to reproduce. See what happens there? Everybody wins!
What if we looked at all of our relationships with this lens? Imagine the shifts in friendships, romantic partnerships, business affiliations – dare I say – political associations!
At Threads Worldwide, we lean heavily on our family values, which lead us to create mutual relationships resulting in a thriving ecosystem of impact. In our network, we look at every level of engagement from a cost/benefit viewpoint. We realize that benefits AND costs come in many different forms – financial, spiritual, environmental, social-emotional, the list goes on.
We want everything/everyone that is connected to Threads to benefit from the interaction – to become brighter, to be elevated. We want customers to feel inspired and proud to be wearing a piece of jewelry that allows them to wear & share their values making them feel connected and beautiful inside and out. We want our Artisan Partners to feel inspired and proud knowing that they are utilizing their gifts to earn income and change the course for future generations. We want Ambassadors – the gatherers – to feel inspired and proud to earn free jewelry by gathering their people to share our Threads movement. We want Fair Trade Partners in the US to feel proud and inspired that they are social impact entrepreneurs and are earning income by creating a marketplace for our Artisan Partners that would not otherwise be available. We want Home Office staff to feel proud and inspired that they work so hard to provide the nutrients our ecosystem needs to flourish.
We believe that this way of relating has the potential to transform the harsh realities of the world we live in and we acknowledge you for being a pivotal part of making this all possible. Thank you for joining us in creating a world that works for everyone.
